"Life Is Just A Bowl of ALL-BRAN, You Wake Up Every Morning And It''s There"

I have had this album in several different formats over the years. First there was the LP with the famous round cover that unfolded into a pop art extravaganza. Then there was an 8 track tape which my friends and I listened to while riding around in an old 1950 Studebaker Champion. Then came the cassette version and finally the CD. My first CD was the original Castle release which was not sonically ideal but hey...I knew the songs so well that it didn''t matter but the time has come for an upgrade and so I purchased this. There are many different versions out there but this one will serve my needs. I didn''t need the 3 disc set as all I wanted was the original album. Often I have found that the extra material thrown in on many re-issues seems more like filler than anything else.

While I have always loved the songs on Side 1 from the instrumental title cut through RENE (Reeny not Rene''), SONG OF A BAKER, and LAZY SUNDAY, it is the side 2 HAPPINESS STAN saga that I keep returning to. As an American who had never heard of Stanley Unwin, I cannot tell you how many times my friends and I played the LP over and over trying to figure out what the hell it was that he was saying. Most of us had read A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (the movie was just around the corner) and were familiar with its language but this was something else. We never did figure it all out. Today we have the internet and you can google (a word Professor Unwin would have loved and used) the words to HAPPINESS STAN and there they are. Not half as much fun though.

I was inspired to revisit this album recently after hearing from the widow (since remarried) of a good friend of mine who died 20 years ago. Of all my friends during my high school and early college years, he was the one (along with myself) who took to the album the most. We would listen to the album and mime Steve Marriott''s vocals on LAZY SUNDAY or Ian McLagan''s repeated piano riff in RENE but it was HAPPINESS STAN that captivated us. The others found STAN too outlandish. Not enough MOTHER GOOSE when they were little, I guess. While OGDEN is very much a product of it''s time, for my money it''s STAN that (stan)ds out and makes the album a timeless classic. As the lyric says "Life is just a bowl of ALL-BRAN, you wake up every morning and it''s there".

This album came out in the ''60''s when I was about 15 & in my rebellious stage. I listened to an FM "underground" station that played music not heard on the AM pop stations. The original album cover was round & had pages that opened up, finally revealing the vinyl album. My record collection was stolen & I despaired of ever finding another copy. I was delighted when I found a copy on Amazon, and listening to it brought back all the fun times I had as a teenager listening to "underground" music. This was before Rod Stewart joined & changed the band, so it''s got a completely different sound. While there are a lot of drug references, the songs are fun, and the side with "Happiness Stan" brings back a lot of fond memories. Definitely a cd for anyone who was a child of the 60''s!

Overall, 4 stars because CD2 is non-essential alternate versions and backing tracks - good fun for a fan like me but I can see it all becoming a bit too much for anyone discovering the Small Faces genious for the first time or just wanting to hear a great LP. Like the other albums in the re-mastered series the accompanying booklet is a veritable treasure trove of photos, memorabilia and credits.

I grew up with the Small Faces, and the music from their short reign has been a signature sound to my life. Itchycoo Park when I was in my very early teens spoke to me (yes I wanted to miss off school) and Tin Soldier, Afterglow and I''m Only Dreamin'' were songs that taught me about teenage angst and absolute love. So of course, Ogden''s was going to find its place in my adolescent life. Brilliant!! Side one with all its variety (Renee is a favourite) and Happiness Stan''s journey on Side two was the Small Faces at their quirkiest and heavy best. To see the live BBC video and see Keith Moon cross legged on the floor at Kenney Jones'' feet is priceless (and historically significant). But for me, the studio content gives a different context for the Small Faces. To hear the instrumental versions and backing tracks for some of these songs is to fully appreciate the musicality of the band, especially Ronnie Lane''s powerful bass coming through loud and clear. I love this stuff !!! For a Small Faces and Steve Marriott fan like myself, this is a valuable addition to my collection. RIP Steve.
